So Elgato just updated their Studio software to version 1.1 for both Windows and Mac. This new update for Apple Silicon Macs is WAY better than the previous version and looks like it could be a winner. Or at the very least, a good direction for Apple Silicon Mac users who use the Elgato HDMI video capture cards, such as the Elgato 4K X.
So in this video I just do an overview of the Studio software with my Elgato 4K X capture card and give my first impressions. If all goes well and there aren't too many bugs or deal breakers. I will do more about it and also test Studio 1.1 and the 4K X with my MacBook Neo.
Here's the test recordings I was talking about in the video. This isn't serious gameplay. However, what I done was to go completely mad and do stuff that would stress any gameplay capture setup. The Windows gaming machine I'm using has a 9800X3D and RTX 5080. Which means I can push the graphics a fair bit. I'm basically pushing raytracing, so I have loads of difficult to record/render lighting and colours and also loads of fast movement, with a lot of explosions etc. All stuff that's stressing the encoding.
*THE VIDEO CAPTURE EXAMPLES I MENTIONED IN THIS VIDEO*
The base, native, recording was in 4K 60FPS using a bitrate of 70Mbps with the H.265 codec. The two edits are also in 4K 60FPS.
Example 1: This video is the native record file directly uploaded:

Example 2: This is the same footage but edited a bit in DaVinci Resolve Studio and exported using H.265 10 Bit 4:2:0 with the Apple hardware encoder, using auto bitrate and two pass encoding:

Example 3: This is the same as example 2 but the output is single pass at 200Mbps:

As I am really pleased with this direction that Elgato are going in with Apple Silicon, I am now happy to recommend the 4K X for Apple Silicon use. At least for simple standalone use, using Studio 1.1. Sure, there will be niggles, but it does look like Elagto are now taking Apple Silicon seriously and applying some development to it.
And yes, we still have some issues with 3rd party capture software, such as OBS. Although, this isn't all Elgato's fault and Apple themselves do have questions to be answered regarding certain issues and limitations. But we can now at least record a basic, reliable capture with the 4K X on Apple Silicon.
I am absolutely blown away by the native upload that I linked to above. The crazy stuff that I was doing in Cyberpunk and the complexity of the temporal information, resolution, colours etc. Were a real torture test of ANY encoding/recording setup and the 4K X with Studio 1.1 handled this amazingly well and the end results speak for themselves.
In fact, I had not done this particular capture test before recording this video. If I had have done, I would have made a big point of how great the base, native recording was and how well it looks after YouTube had done its thing. I may revisit this in another video soon, just to emphasise how happy I am with the recording using Studio 1.1 and the 4K X.
So yeah, I will now be recommending and linking to the 4K X for Apple Silicon use. In fact, I am now confident enough to start buying and testing other Elgato capture cards for Apple Silicon use 👍 And will definitely be doing more videos about game capture etc. on Apple Silicon and using Elgato capture cards.
