macOS on iPad Pro, why can’t we have it? With the new MacBook Ultra, Apple is introducing a touch sensitive to screen to the MacBook family, something that Steve Jobs said would never happen https://share.google/aimode/9i0BBI0jwdw143kcf And with the MacBook Neo, Apple is using an iPhone chip to run a laptop with macOS.
So with the old arguments of Apple never doing certain things due to cannibalisation of its products, or certain products not being conducive to adjacent technologies and product ranges staying firmly within their lanes. Is it now time for Apple to allow macOS on the iPad Pro as an option?
This could be easily done within the main settings with a toggle between iPadOS and macOS, which becomes active next time you turn on the iPad Pro, or even live switching or even an option as soon as you power on the iPad Pro. After all, iPadOS/iOS and macOS are based on the same Unix Darwin core https://share.google/aimode/bOOcO5R5LeFPcfvop
Given that an iPad Pro, even the M4 version, is fundamentally more powerful than a MacBook Neo with its A18 Pro iPhone processor https://share.google/aimode/rZHbwjAxAqWvmYcr7 There’s no question that the iPad Pro can run macOS. And given that the iPad Pro configurations have at least the same amount of RAM and storage as the MacBook Neo, and have the options for up to 16GB RAM and 2TB storage. Then there’s no RAM or storage reasons for not having macOS on iPad Pro.
Yes, the screen area is a little smaller on the 11 inch iPad Pro compared to the MacBook Neo. However, the 13 inch iPad Pro has more screen area compared to the MacBook Neo. But don’t forget, Apple used to have a MacBook with a smaller screen area than the iPad Pros, the 11.6-inch MacBook Air. So screen size isn’t an issue with the iPad Pros.
However, even for me anything below a 16 inch screen sizes becomes difficult to use with certain applications that I used on a MacBook. So I would do with an iPad Pro with macOS exactly what I do with my MacBook Pro when I am at home. I connect it to a Thunderbolt dock and use a 32 inch monitor, keyboard, mouse, ethernet and have a number of USB and Thunderbolt SSDs connected. All while supplying power using just one Thunderbolt cable. Basically, turning a MacBook or iPad Pro into a desktop computer for even more flexibility.
So yeah. Given what I have explained and the changes that Apple are making and how they are now blurring the lines between traditional tablets and laptops. I don’t think that it would be a bad idea to give iPad Pro users the option of using macOS. And for those who have no interest in macOS on the iPad Pro, they simply use the option to use iPadOS.
