One of the most contentious elections in United States history was between Republican Rutherford B. Hayes and Democrat Samuel J. Tilden. The election saw Sam Tilden win more than fifty percent of the popular vote but still lose the election Rutherford Hayes won more electoral votes. Hayes won the electoral vote only by pulling a single more vote than Tilden. Hayes had 185 and Tilden had 184.
The election results caused social upheaval previously unseen. There were not only threats of violence, but actual shots fired at president-elect Hayes. The infamous Compromise of 1877 video was agreed upon to allow Hayes the presidency while appeasing Southern Democrats. The controversial agreement officially ended southern reconstruction.
There were only four other times in which the victor of a presidential election didn't win the popular vote. John Quincy Adams lost the popular vote by a large margin to Andrew Jackson (with both Henry Clay and William H. Crawford taking a share), but won the election.
Grover Cleveland failed in his first attempt at a second term despite beating Benjamin Harrison in the popular vote.
Probably most contentious of all was Al Gore vs. George W. Bush in 2000. Bush won by only five electoral votes, but in the deciding states the margins of victory were extremely close.
