A brave elderly woman fended off a leopard in India. Indian leopard attacks may have peaked during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, coinciding with rapid urbanization. Attacks in India are still relatively common, and in some regions of the country leopards kill more humans than all other large carnivores combined. The Indian states of Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal experience the most severe human leopard conflict.
A video from Kalyanpur, Lucknow went viral in which a photojournalist was attacked by a leopard, while he was trying to take its pictures. photojournalism can be quite risky, as the journalist has to reach a spot on time and then have the responsibility of taking good pictures. The profession demands taking risks and sometimes journalist do get badly injured or even die while doing their job.
The dramatic video captured on CCTV shows the predator lying in wait outside a house on Wednesday. The leopard attacked the woman when she stepped out with a walking stick and sat on the front porch. A 55 yeas old was sitting on the front porch, when the leopard crept up on her from behind and attacked her. The brave woman started to hit the leopard with her walking stick and managed to fend it off. The woman, identified as Nirmala Devi Singh, was rushed to a nearby hospital with scratches on her face, elbow, arm, back and leg. Forest Division of Mumbai confirmed that the claw marks indicated that the attack was carried out by a sub adult leopard. And this wasn't the first attack of this young leopard, it had been terrorising the neighbourhood for couple of months and had been attacking pets in the area. This was its 8th attack and luckily the elderly woman managed to fend it off. T
