Baltimore has lost a true champion whose greatest victories came far beyond the football field. O.J. Brigance died this week after a 19-year battle with ALS.
He was a member of the Ravens' first Super Bowl championship team, O.J. played football with uncommon intensity. But after his ALS diagnosis in 2007, he and his wife, Chanda, turned an unimaginable challenge into a mission of service by creating the Brigance Brigade Foundation.
Its work has helped hundreds of families confronting ALS, providing grants for in-home care, medical equipment and home modifications — expenses that can be financially overwhelming. The foundation also supports caregivers, advocates for the ALS community and encourages participation in research.
Its mission is to equip, encourage and empower families affected by ALS, which reflects the way O.J. lived his life. Within the Ravens organization, O.J. was a beloved leader, but he was also well embraced by the city that became his home.
