The League for People with Disabilities wants to revive a long-standing program at its Northeast Baltimore accessible pool that was lost during the pandemic. However, there is one hurdle: a lack of qualified swimming instructors. The league is on a mission to make sure all Baltimoreans have access to water safety skills. "This pool has literally saved my life," said Michele Weaver-Johns, a longtime member of The League for People with Disabilities' wellness center. On Thursday, Weaver-Johns, who recently underwent open-heart surgery, returned to the therapeutic, heated pool, feeling strong and proud of her recovery. She even swam 40 laps earlier this week. "One of the reasons why I was able to live with a heart disease that was not discovered until I turned 65 was that I was exercising here at The League," she said.
