EdgeRouter POE - Fixing my Home Network with Ubiquiti Network Equipment @TheBreadboardca

I have had numerous issues with my home network over the last 6 months to a year, WIFI dropping out without any apparent reason, router loosing internet connectivity and many others, this was traced to my Netgear dual band wifi / router. it needed to be replaced!

This video is long and a little unstructured as it simply details my experience in getting the router up and running, while I know networking pretty well, I have never used an Ubiquiti product before and hopes to help others going through their upgrades

In order to fix this I bought Ubiquiti Router and WIFI access points
This cost the same (Approximately) as it would have for a high performance home router but with many advantages like dual Access points positioned at points to cover the whole house, all with the router still in the basement. additionally I gained a new level of configuration and control over my home network.

This was a new router to me and I had to learn many new things in order to configure it. It also came with a very old firmware version... I dont know why. so the video includes all the issues I faced resulting in a bit longer than I wanted.

This is NOT a sponsored video, I had to buy all the equipment with my own money and the project was undertaken out of necessity, I recorded it hoping the experience can help others.

This first part focuses on the EdgeRouter POE, a 5 port router with many advanced features and includes
• (5) Gigabit routing ports
• (5) PoE configurable ports
• Supports 24V or 48V PoE
• (3) ports configurable for switching
• 1 million packets per second for 64-byte packets

Is WEB configurable, once I got through a few hurdles like upgrading to the latest firmware and realizing DYDNS was not enabled, everything went fairly smoothly

$IOT Friday - Possibly the Cheapest IoT Node on the Planet pt1 The ESP8266 chip on its various SBC modules is rapidly becoming the GOTO for many low cost and low complexity (Relatively) solutions for an IoT Node. With Models like the SONOFF and Slampher from ITead Studio, the ESP01, ESP 12 and many other derivatives, all for well under 5$ and some close to 2$ there hard to beat. The Itead Studio parts come complete with power supply, Relay and a cloud service and Smart App. But where is the fun in just buying one and using a remote cloud service. We will go through re-programming the (ANY) ESP8266 modules with the code a friend of mine created Peter Scargill. http://tech.scargill.net/. You have a choice of IDEs, including the Arduino Wiring IDE, Visual Studio, Eclipse or if you have the BIN files (As we will do in this video), a simple FLASH programmer) So with all Pete has included in this code base there is no need for me to write my own to setup my home automation system (I will show you in later videos). To complete the setup you will need at least a master control using MQTT and Node Red (If you want to minimize your coding effort). This can easily run on any Raspberry pi as a headless SBC and even on lesser powered Linux machines or alternately a Beaglebone Black. or pretty much any Linux system sporting Node Red and MQTT. You can also use Eclipse , IBM, Mosquitto MQTT Internet based services if you want as an alternative. The purpose here is to set it up at home and then allow only what you want out onto the internet.
