Ebola has spread to 60 health zones in eastern Congo — the fastest outbreak on record. 5,794 confirmed cases. 2,786 dead. Health workers in Ituri and North Kivu say they have not been paid since May.
The two newest zones are Biena and Manguredjipa in North Kivu, where the death rate is near 69%. Ituri is still the epicenter. The virus is Bundibugyo: no approved vaccine, no specific treatment. Declared in mid-May; circulating since February.
Workers have struck in Bunia, Rwampara, Mongbwalu, Nizi, Kasenyi, and Kisangani. Promised pay was about $510 a month. Many got nothing — or $380. The government says payroll lists are wrong. The health minister said 15–20% of names on one 1,000-person list were fake. He called it “Ebola business.”
