A rare tornado touched down in Atlantic Beach, Long Island on Thursday evening, August 20, 2026, after a waterspout moved onshore during powerful thunderstorms. The National Weather Service confirmed the tornado struck the Sun & Surf Beach Club, destroying roughly one-third of its 115 cabanas. It was the first confirmed tornado in Nassau County since 2021.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman declared a state of emergency. One minor injury was reported. Cleanup and structural inspections are underway Friday as officials determine whether any cabanas can reopen this summer.
The same severe storms caused widespread flooding across New York City and Long Island, major subway delays, downed trees and power lines, and ground stops with long delays at Newark Airport. A lightning strike also sparked an attic fire in Summit, New Jersey.
