On Oct. 28, 2021, NOAA’s GOES East satellite observed a strong solar flare with its Solar Ultraviolet Imager (SUVI) at 11:35 am ET. The flare produced aurora (northern lights) that were visible across Canada and as far south as Pennsylvania, Iowa, and Oregon. The JPSS satellites were able to capture imagery of these aurora via their VIIRS instrument, showing their extent.
Solar flares—an important type of space weather—are localized, explosive outbursts on the Sun, and can generate intense radiation in the form of X-rays and energetic particles that can sometimes affect Earth. Because this radiation often travels at or near the speed of light, it can reach the Earth within about 8 minutes. Flares are often linked to eruptions, called coronal mass ejections (CMEs), which hurl massive clouds of magnetized plasma far into space, plowing right through the continuous flow of charged particles that normally stream from the Sun, called solar wind, and can reach Earth in up to three days.
NOAA satellites help monitor the activity of the Sun and when solar flares, or coronal mass ejections occur. Since these events can happen unpredictably and some can reach Earth within minutes, NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center uses this information to monitor the activity on the Sun and makes forecasts, predictions, and alerts.

![NOAA Satellites Track Blazing Wildfires in Chile
Record summer temperatures of more than 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius) in the Southern Hemisphere are hampering efforts to tackle a large wildfire outbreak of at least 231 individual fires across central Chile. The fires have killed at least 26 people, left at least 1,182 injured, destroyed 1,100 homes and prompted the declaration of a state of emergency in three regions.

![Hurricane Beryl Kicks Off 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season
Hurricane Beryl, the first hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, rapidly strengthened to a Category 5 storm unusually early in the year. This explosive strengthening was fueled in part by exceptionally warm ocean temperatures. That heat was one of the factors behind NOAA’s prediction in May of an 85% chance that the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season would be above normal.
On top of the heat, another factor pointing to an especially active season is the likely development of La Niña later this summer. La Niña reduces Atlantic trade winds and leads to less wind shear (the changing of wind speed and direction with height). While La Niña has yet to officially develop, the main development region (the area in the tropical Atlantic where most tropical cyclones form) has been near record warm. Sea surface temperatures in this area are closer to what would be expected in the middle of September–the peak of hurricane season. Meaning there was ample fuel for Beryl to not only form but also to rapidly intensify.

![Happy Earth Day from NOAA Satellites
NOAA satellites have been monitoring Earth’s weather and environment since 1970, which also happened to be the year the first official Earth Day took place! Building upon early pioneering efforts by NASA and others, today’s advanced satellites provide critical information that feeds forecast models and warns us of severe weather and environmental hazards. NOAA operates two types of satellites that monitor the Earth: polar-orbiting and geostationary.
As we celebrate Earth Day, let us marvel at the wonders of our planet and reflect on our responsibility to cherish and protect it. Together, let’s ensure that the view from space remains a symbol of hope and inspiration for generations to come.

![Earth From Orbit: Atmospheric River Hits the West Coast
Did you know that rivers don’t just run over land, but also through the sky?
Water vapor is constantly circulating through the atmosphere, particularly around the warm equatorial regions of our planet. Under the right conditions, it forms clouds and precipitation, and sometimes, long narrow bands of concentrated water vapor that carry huge amounts of moisture into the upper latitudes. These streams are referred to as “atmospheric rivers,” which are a primary feature in the global water cycle.
On Sunday, California and the Pacific Northwest were hit by both a large atmospheric river as well as what meteorologists call a “bomb cyclone,” which forms when air pressure drops rapidly and the storm explosively strengthens. According to NWS Seattle, the storm’s pressure dropped to 942.5 mb—the lowest pressure ever recorded off the Washington coast.
This convergence of storms brought more than half a foot of rain to parts of the Bay area in addition to strong winds, flash floods, and mud/landslides. They also bring the potential for heavy snow to higher elevations in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. The National Weather Service in Seattle and Tacoma, Wash. predict that the huge storm system may even reach Vancouver Island in southern British Columbia today.
Authorities from California, which has been plagued with wildfires and drought, warned that areas where fire has eliminated large amounts of vegetation (known as burn scars), could see debris flows of rushing mud, rocks, or vegetation that may sound like cracking, roaring, or even a freight train. They are warning residents to not attempt to cross a debris flow and to take shelter in the highest floor of their homes in case one occurs. Additionally, there are currently at least 150,000 power outages according to PowerOutage.US due to the extreme weather, and two people were killed when a tree fell on their vehicle near Seattle.
NOAA satellites are vital in providing important information about airborne moisture so we can better understand atmospheric rivers to not only make better weather forecasts, but manage water resources, and predict flood risks.
