Did you know that rivers don’t just run over land, but also through the sky?
Water vapor is constantly circulating through the atmosphere, particularly around the warm equatorial regions of our planet. Under the right conditions, it forms clouds and precipitation, and sometimes, long narrow bands of concentrated water vapor that carry huge amounts of moisture into the upper latitudes. These streams are referred to as “atmospheric rivers,” which are a primary feature in the global water cycle.
On Sunday, California and the Pacific Northwest were hit by both a large atmospheric river as well as what meteorologists call a “bomb cyclone,” which forms when air pressure drops rapidly and the storm explosively strengthens. According to NWS Seattle, the storm’s pressure dropped to 942.5 mb—the lowest pressure ever recorded off the Washington coast.
This convergence of storms brought more than half a foot of rain to parts of the Bay area in addition to strong winds, flash floods, and mud/landslides. They also bring the potential for heavy snow to higher elevations in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. The National Weather Service in Seattle and Tacoma, Wash. predict that the huge storm system may even reach Vancouver Island in southern British Columbia today.
Authorities from California, which has been plagued with wildfires and drought, warned that areas where fire has eliminated large amounts of vegetation (known as burn scars), could see debris flows of rushing mud, rocks, or vegetation that may sound like cracking, roaring, or even a freight train. They are warning residents to not attempt to cross a debris flow and to take shelter in the highest floor of their homes in case one occurs. Additionally, there are currently at least 150,000 power outages according to PowerOutage.US due to the extreme weather, and two people were killed when a tree fell on their vehicle near Seattle.
NOAA satellites are vital in providing important information about airborne moisture so we can better understand atmospheric rivers to not only make better weather forecasts, but manage water resources, and predict flood risks.

![NOAA Satellites View 2023 Summer and Winter Solstices
The 2023 summer solstice occurred on Wednesday, June 21 at 10:57 a.m. Eastern Time, marking the longest day and shortest night of the year, as well as the first day of astronomical summer in the Northern Hemisphere. The summer solstice is the exact moment each year when the hemisphere reaches its greatest possible tilt toward the sun. The suns direct rays reach their northernmost position with respect to Earths equator, along the Tropic of Cancer, at 23.5°N latitude.
At the same time in the Southern Hemisphere, the winter solstice occurred when the hemisphere reached its greatest possible tilt away from the sun, marking the shortest day and longest night of the year.

![NOAA Satellites View Annular Eclipse
On Saturday, Oct. 14, 2023, NOAA satellites observed an annular solar eclipse traverse parts of North, Central, and South America.
During a solar eclipse, the Moon crosses between the Earth and the Sun, casting a shadowy path as it moves. However, the Moons orbit around the Earth is not a perfect circle; its slightly elliptical. This means that the Moons distance from Earth varies throughout its orbit.
When the Moon is near its apogee (the farthest point from Earth in its orbit), it appears smaller in the sky. Conversely, when its closer to its perigee (the closest point to Earth), it appears larger.
During an annular solar eclipse, the Moon moves in front of the Sun at or near apogee. At this distance, it is not large enough from our perspective on Earth to completely cover the Sun. The result is an annular solar eclipse, where the edges of the solar disk peek out around the moon, creating a “ring of fire” phenomenon if viewed from within its shadow’s path.

![NOAA Satellites Monitor Wildfires
Roughly 100 wildfires are raging out of control across the western United States and hundreds more are burning in Canada, destroying homes, forcing evacuations, and affecting air quality. NOAA satellites have been closely monitoring these blazes, including California’s Park Fire, which is currently the largest active wildfire in the U.S.
The Park Fire, which started on July 24, 2024, is believed to have been ignited by arson. A suspect has been arrested, accused of pushing a burning car into a gully, sparking the blaze. As of Aug. 1, the fire has consumed 392,480 acres across Butte, Plumas, Shasta, and Tehama counties. Fueled by very dry grass and brush, and driven by strong winds, the fire was only 18% contained.

![Large Geomagnetic Storm Hits Earth
On April 21, 2023, a coronal mass ejection (CME) erupted from the sun, spewing out a burst of plasma that raced toward Earth at nearly two million miles per hour and generated a severe geomagnetic storm (level 4 out of 5 on NOAA’s space weather G- scale) at 3:26 p.m. EDT on April 23.

![Extreme Ocean Temperatures Are Affecting Florida’s Coral Reef
Since April 2023, NOAA has been monitoring a steady rise in ocean temperatures, which is resulting in unprecedented heat stress conditions in the Caribbean basin, including waters surrounding Florida and the Gulf of Mexico. On Thursday, August 17, 2023, NOAA scientists provided a briefing on how these record-breaking warm ocean temperatures have stressed, bleached, and in some cases, killed corals within the 3,800 square miles of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.
Coral reefs are often referred to as the rainforests of the sea, due to their incredible biodiversity and ecological importance. They provide vital benefits as part of marine ecosystems by sustaining habitats for marine life, buffering the harmful impacts of storms on coastal communities, and supporting local economies through tourism and fishing.

![Monumental U.S. Storm Brings Severe Winter Weather Coast to Coast
A massive winter storm recently made its way across the U.S. Parts of Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas were blasted by severe weather and tornadoes while heavy rain and snow blanketed much of California and parts of the West on Monday.
The now well-traveled storm began its journey late last week with an arctic blast in the Pacific Northwest, shutting down much of Oregon’s largest city with almost a foot of snow and paralyzing travel from parts of the Pacific Coast all the way to the northern Plains.

![Hurricane Francine Slams Northern Gulf Coast
NOAA satellites have been closely tracking Tropical Storm Francine since it formed in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico over the weekend. Initially designated as Potential Tropical Cyclone Six on Sept. 8, 2024, it strengthened into a tropical storm the following day, continuing to intensify as it moved north toward Louisiana.
Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry urged residents to not to panic, but be prepared and follow evacuation orders. In response, people across the region have been filling sandbags, stocking up on essentials, and fueling their vehicles.
By late Tuesday morning, Sept. 10, Francine remained a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph (100 kph), according to the National Hurricane Center. However, fueled by the Gulf’s exceptionally warm waters—about 87 degrees Fahrenheit (31 degrees Celsius)—Francine intensified into a Category 1 hurricane by 7 p.m. CDT, and by the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 11, the storm had sustained winds of 90 mph. The Gulf’s ocean heat content is currently at record-high levels.
Around 4 p.m. CDT that same day, Francine strengthened further to a Category 2 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 100 mph. The storm made landfall roughly an hour later in southern Louisiana in the Parish of Terrebonne, about 30 miles south-southwest of Morgan City, inundating the coastal areas with flash flooding that made many roads impassable and caused power outages that left hundreds of thousands of customers in the dark. As of Thursday morning, over 388,000 utility customers in Louisiana, 52,000 in Mississippi, and 10,000 in Alabama were without power, according to PowerOutage.us.
