The 2022 Atlantic hurricane season officially concluded on Nov. 30.
It was a fairly average hurricane season with 14 named storms, eight of which strengthened into hurricanes. Two of these became major hurricanes (category 3 or higher on the Saffir–Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale). Despite this, it became one of the costliest Atlantic hurricane seasons on record, mostly due to Hurricane Ian.
Additionally, it was the first season since 1997 in which no tropical cyclones formed in August, and the first season on record to do so during a La Niña year.
The GOES East (GOES-16) satellite recorded this imagery of the entire Atlantic basin from its operational location of 75.2 degrees west longitude. This allows us to show storms as they form off the coast of Africa and then enter the Atlantic.

![Monumental U.S. Storm Brings Severe Winter Weather Coast to Coast
A massive winter storm recently made its way across the U.S. Parts of Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas were blasted by severe weather and tornadoes while heavy rain and snow blanketed much of California and parts of the West on Monday.
The now well-traveled storm began its journey late last week with an arctic blast in the Pacific Northwest, shutting down much of Oregon’s largest city with almost a foot of snow and paralyzing travel from parts of the Pacific Coast all the way to the northern Plains.

![Hurricane Francine Slams Northern Gulf Coast
NOAA satellites have been closely tracking Tropical Storm Francine since it formed in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico over the weekend. Initially designated as Potential Tropical Cyclone Six on Sept. 8, 2024, it strengthened into a tropical storm the following day, continuing to intensify as it moved north toward Louisiana.
Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry urged residents to not to panic, but be prepared and follow evacuation orders. In response, people across the region have been filling sandbags, stocking up on essentials, and fueling their vehicles.
By late Tuesday morning, Sept. 10, Francine remained a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph (100 kph), according to the National Hurricane Center. However, fueled by the Gulf’s exceptionally warm waters—about 87 degrees Fahrenheit (31 degrees Celsius)—Francine intensified into a Category 1 hurricane by 7 p.m. CDT, and by the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 11, the storm had sustained winds of 90 mph. The Gulf’s ocean heat content is currently at record-high levels.
Around 4 p.m. CDT that same day, Francine strengthened further to a Category 2 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 100 mph. The storm made landfall roughly an hour later in southern Louisiana in the Parish of Terrebonne, about 30 miles south-southwest of Morgan City, inundating the coastal areas with flash flooding that made many roads impassable and caused power outages that left hundreds of thousands of customers in the dark. As of Thursday morning, over 388,000 utility customers in Louisiana, 52,000 in Mississippi, and 10,000 in Alabama were without power, according to PowerOutage.us.

![Earth from Orbit: Mauna Loa Erupts for First Time Since 1984
On Nov. 28, 2022, the world’s largest active volcano began erupting for the first time since 1984. Mauna Loa, located on Hawaii’s Big Island, began spewing ash and debris from its summit around 11:30 p.m. local time after a series of earthquakes. Lava was ejected to heights of up to 148 feet on Nov. 29.
NOAA satellites monitored the ongoing eruption, lava flow, ash plume, and sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions. GOES-17 (GOES West) provided one-minute imagery to help NOAA’sNational Weather Service Pacific Region monitor the evolution of the eruption and volcanic plumes in real-time. GOES-18, still undergoing post-launch testing, began collecting 30-second imagery of the eruption on Nov. 30. This rapid-update imagery allowed forecasters to observe the hottest areas of the lava field as well as the constant emission of ash and vapor.

![California’s Oak Fire Near Yosemite Spreads Rapidly
The Oak Fire, burning near California’s Yosemite National Park, exploded in size the weekend of July 23–24, 2022 after igniting on Friday, July 22, and is now the largest fire in California so far this year. According to fire officials, the flames are moving extremely fast through the parched foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains fueled by a large amount of dried vegetation, a result of extended drought conditions.
The fire has currently consumed more than 18,800 acres and has destroyed 100 structures. So far, more than 6,000 residents have been evacuated. California’s governor, Gavin Newsom, declared a State of Emergency for Mariposa County on Saturday, and air quality advisories were issued in the Bay Area due to heavy smoke.

![GOES-19 Becomes GOES East
NOAA’s GOES-19 satellite, the latest and final satellite in NOAA’s GOES-R Series, officially began operations as GOES East today. This milestone comes after its June 25, 2024, launch and subsequent post-launch testing of its instruments, systems and data.
GOES-19 replaces GOES-16 as GOES East, positioned 22,236 miles above the equator at 75.2 degrees west longitude. GOES-16 will now become a backup for NOAA’s operational geostationary constellation, maintaining its operational readiness for future use, if needed.
