Pikes Peak Hill Climb in Colorado has been called “the most dangerous road racing event in the world” by Road & Track Magazine and is also known as “The Race to the Clouds.” The race is only 12.42 miles toward the 14,115 ft mountain summit, and with 156 turns, some without guardrails, Pikes Peak Hill Climb is no simple race. The race first ran August 10-12, 1916, and the best drivers have been testing their drive times up this public road ever since. In 1916, the first winner was Rea Lentz who made the summit with a time of 20:55:600 (that’s 20+minutes!) By 2018, the fastest time was down to 07:57:148 in a prototype electric Volkswagen driven by Frenchman Romain Dumas.
From the early days of 1916, on an unpaved road (as of 2011 it’s been paved), both cars, and later motorcycles, took the turns while climbing just under 10,000 ft. on their way to the summit. The current race includes 6 racing divisions: Unlimited, Time Attack 1, Pikes Peak GT4 Trophy by Yokohama, Open Wheel, Pikes Peak Open, and Exhibition. Pikes Peak Hill Climb is considered to be America’s second oldest motorsports event.
