Prior to computers (and in flight school) we used a circular slide rule called an E6B to calculate fuel burns, distances and true airspeed/altitude. In this comprehensive video, we go over all the functions of the E6B in one episode.

Note: When dealing with slide rules, the 1 or 10 mark is called the 'INDEX'. We have an index on both the C and D Scale (the white scale and the black scale). There is also a 'Rate Index' in the shape of a black triangle on the white C scale. This is the 60 min mark.

In this episode Bob looks at the error induced by uncorrected refraction in the Method Al Biruni. The dip correction on a sextant accounts not only for the curve of the earth but refraction as well. $The Radius of the Earth | Al Biruni Following up on our last video where we found the height of a mountain using the tangent function and a little algebra. Today we use that information to determine the radius of the earth and have a discussion of the effects of refraction. Upon review I noticed a slight error in my discussion of refraction. What I was discussing was the standard refraction of 7/6 R. Given a determination of the REFRACTED radius, to get the true radius you would divide by 7/6 or MULTIPLY by 6/7. I accidently said divide by 6/7. Sorry for the confusion. Learning a lot of new skills- drilling metal, tapping, and solving problems. The mount is dry fit and leveling ability checked. We still need to attach the extension, drill the mounting plate (might need a machine shop to do that), tap the stud for the traversing mechanism and rig the attachment rod.
