The science denier community is trying to make hay with the idea of not being able to use 'bendy light and the apparent horizon'. In this episode Bob looks at the error induced by uncorrected refraction in the Method Al Biruni.

The dip correction on a sextant accounts not only for the curve of the earth but refraction as well. The result is a measurement from a horizontal plane.

$The Radius of the Earth | Al Biruni Following up on our last video where we found the height of a mountain using the tangent function and a little algebra. Today we use that information to determine the radius of the earth and have a discussion of the effects of refraction. Upon review I noticed a slight error in my discussion of refraction. What I was discussing was the standard refraction of 7/6 R. Given a determination of the REFRACTED radius, to get the true radius you would divide by 7/6 or MULTIPLY by 6/7. I accidently said divide by 6/7. Sorry for the confusion. Learning a lot of new skills- drilling metal, tapping, and solving problems. The mount is dry fit and leveling ability checked. We still need to attach the extension, drill the mounting plate (might need a machine shop to do that), tap the stud for the traversing mechanism and rig the attachment rod.
