Water connects us all and last year, it also brought our team to the front lines of a wildlife crisis.
When a harmful algal bloom off the coast of California released a powerful neurotoxin called domoic acid, hundreds of sea lions were affected, causing seizures, confusion, and, in many cases, death. In response, DZCA staff stepped in to help.
Our Veterinary and Animal Care teams traveled to support the Marine Mammal Care Center, working alongside partners to treat, rehabilitate, and ultimately release sea lions back into the ocean.
For many, like our Registered Veterinary Technician Danielle, it was a full-circle moment, helping care for these animals and then watching them return home.
This is what conservation looks like: collaboration, compassion, and action when wildlife needs it most.
