"Oh, If I Should Die Tonight, oh Baby, Though it be Far Before My Time"
I was writing a song about dying, when I noticed that everyone who writes or sings about death, dies ... and usually tragically.
Marvin Gaye was an American R&B and soul singer and songwriter who helped to shape the sound of Motown in the 1960s, with songs such as "What's Going On" and "I Heard It Through the Grapevine", earning him the nicknames "Prince of Motown".
On his 1973 album, Let's Get It On, he included one dark song entitled "If I Should Die Tonight". On his 1978 album, he included an anti-violence song entitled "Anger".
In 1984, Gaye intervened in a fight between his parents and his father shot Gaye twice, once in the chest, piercing his heart. Gaye was 44 when he died.
Side Note: I quickly reworked the theme of my tune to be about returning home through space and time (totally not dying). I then dropped the lyrics and turned the melody into a guitar instrumental. That should be safe (youtu.be/1FuUKGrjEGY)!
