In March, we drove 1,024 miles to our new home, so naturally I was signing this song in my head the whole trip. It had to be the first song that I recorded in our new home and the video had to feature our 'middle of nowhere'.
I first noticed Pete Anderson's work on Blue Rodeo's "Casino" album and after the release of Dwight's "This Time" album, I was hooked. I started listening to his playing on the early Dwight Yoakam albums. He has a guitar style that feels like Bakersfield evolved, with older work twanging out hillbilly honky-tonk licks and later work pumping out commercial pentatonics recorded in Hollywood. For this tune, I used a Line 6 Variax and recorded the guitar track a little hotter than Pete's (with the volume at 11). The song is a simple C, Am, F, G pattern, but Dwight's style brings it back to Bakersfield, especially for the yodelling at the bridge.
