Dragon Breed C64 by Activision, played from tape
Firstly, if you're not viewing at 50hz, the dragons tail is going to look like crap. It looks great on my CRT output, and it looks good on my TV playing youtube, but it looks like ass on my laptop. YMMV etc.
I've never played this one before, but after my complaints about st dragon, it was suggested I try this instead for a better c64 dragon based shooter. On the one hand, this being an ash+dave joint, they actually managed to get the dragon right, unlike st. dragon - yes, it flickers, but it's done well, and it's really playable in that regard. The difficulty is pretty hard on the boss fight, but that's just a matter of practice.
But my god is the loading fucking terrible. In particular, it commits the two grievous sins of:
a) separate title load to level 1
b) on game over, even on level 1, rewind the tape to side one and load the entire game again from scratch
That second one always makes me mad, because I might as well just reset the computer at that point - I'm literally not saving any time at all. There's no reason they couldn't have had a tape counter reset to load level 1 again, but no.... fuck tape users.
