After decades of train horns, downtown Kent is getting quieter.

A new Quiet Zone is now in effect along the BNSF Railway mainline, meaning engineers are no longer required to sound their horns at eight public crossings downtown.

The city invested $3.5 million in the project, which took about 14 years to plan.

“This is a game changer for downtown,” Kent Mayor Dana Ralph said Thursday. “It is a game changer for our residents, for our businesses.”
