A new farmers market is giving people who live and work in downtown Cleveland another option for fresh food following the closure of the Heinen's downtown location.

North Union Farmers Market launched its new downtown market Tuesday at Mall B as a six-week pilot, drawing shoppers including Pamela Stevenson-Spivey, who works for the city of Cleveland.

"Oh my gosh, I love it," Stevenson-Spivey said. "I just spoke with someone and I told them. We should've had this a long time ago."

Stevenson-Spivey said picking up groceries near work can be difficult without a traditional grocery store downtown.

"Just imagine working eight hours a day and you're thinking about, hey, I need some options on where I can go if I have to travel all the way home and then try to find a grocery store because there are no grocery stores around here, this is perfect for me," Stevenson-Spivey said.

The city of Cleveland approached North Union Farmers Market earlier this year about bringing one of its markets downtown. The subsequent closure of Heinen's added urgency to those plans, according to Kawai Bitto, director of market operations for North Union Farmers Market.
