DORK is an experimental mixed-media animated short film directed by Ryan Castrillo, combining hand-drawn animation, rotoscoping, live action, and 2D compositing.
When two strangers pass each other on a New York subway platform, what feels like only a few seconds stretches into a lifetime, a psychedelic barrage of color, sound, memory, and feeling spilling across the New York landscape.
For Castrillo, DORK is part dedication, part evolution of aa comic and short film idea, and part collection of raw feelings brought together frame by frame.
Much of the film was animated in Procreate using live-action footage captured by Castrillo across New York and Iceland. The film combines 2D characters composited into live-action environments with animation and rotoscoping drawn directly over people, objects, and places in the real world.
DORK was edited, color corrected, and sound mixed in DaVinci Resolve.
There is zero AI usage in the making of this film. Full stop.
