![The Worst Steering Fix Weve Ever Seen | 1967 Mustang Power Steering
A previous shop butchered the power steering on this 1967 Mustang hardtop — they lopped the end off the steering box to mate it to a Flaming River column, cut the shaft too short, then jammed a 19mm impact socket in the gap and held it together with booger welds. In this episode Jeff Ford tears out the Fabricobble and shows you how to set up a 1967 Mustang steering box the right way.
This little 302 / AOD hardtop came in for a transmission and turned into a full-systems restoration, and the steering was the scariest thing we found under it. Rather than reach for a Borgeson box, Jeff makes the case for rebuilding and running the original Ford steering box — the same basic unit Ford used from the 1960 Galaxie all the way through the 1970 Mustang — and walks through exactly what it takes to make an original box talk cleanly to a steering column of unknown origin.
In this one we cover:
• Why the original steering box still runs down the road beautifully with the right caster
• The truth about leaky slave cylinders (hint: its the wrong part, not the design)
• Setting up a proper double-D steering shaft with a machined flat and a Unisteer U-joint — and why a round shaft with set screws can cost you your steering
• The full power steering refresh from National Parts Depot: new ram valve, slave cylinder, hoses, and the hose clamp assembly that was missing for years
• Why new hoses matter any time you open up an old power steering system
Next week we finish the job and show you the correct way to route and connect the hoses to the slave cylinder and ram valve.
Parts and support from National Parts Depot, with the CVF Racing serpentine system already on the car and a Precision Exhaust setup on the way.
