One of the things I really love from this track is how the organ bit just slowly fades in and opens up.
Also, I think I'm starting to get the whole "retrowave" sort of sound nailed down! I had fun dialing in a sound to layer with the drawbar-organ part.
The Juno-styled chorus and my whammy bar also return once more for this track as well! I did decide to swap out my usual amp sim for another. I really wanted something warmer, and mellower, compared to my usual brighter tone.
I wound up changing up the cello melody that plays midway through the song. Mainly since that's the part that got replaced with the lead guitar bit. Had to mess with it for noodlin' and whammy-bar goofin' shenanigans.
Something of note that I managed to properly achieve was the use of gated reverb! Now, I know, this is a REALLY old and easy trick that just about every audio guy knows how to set up... but it took me forever to get it right, mainly because for whatever reason, the gate that I was using wasn't side-chaining properly. Thus, I never bothered messing with it any further. That is, until I finally decided to use a different gate plugin like I did here!
Once I got the aux/send-channel set up running parallel with the snare, I excitedly did the same for the kick and the toms as well. That gated reverb just really adds a special something to the drums on tracks like this especially!

This time around weve got a nice and spooky-sounding track.
Things were pretty straightforward here on this one, I just layered up my synths to get the textures that I wanted.
I will say though, its never not going to be hilarious how my DAR Beerstorming audio-clip works so well for creepy background ambiance. Basically, back during the D64D2 marathon, I decided to record a two-minute clip of me cracking open a cold one and proceeding to ramble, laugh, and belch into the microphone. Then, through the magic that is sound-design, I reversed, slowed, and distorted it (among other things) as heard here.

Been a while since we had a D64 track (well, technically Watch Your Rock was a rockin take on Blood Red Shadows)!
More spooky noises, but this time weve got some strings and synth strings to give a bit more musicality to things.
For a bit, I thought about whether I wanted to use all normal strings or not. After listening to the original, I decided to keep the low-strings normal. However, for the higher-strings, I decided to go more electronic/synth strings.
I had fun messing around with filters and reverbs again. For the high-strings in particular, I wound up also routing them to an aux channel that I then heavily saturated and reverberated. I also did a lot of volume automation on my layers again. Swelling all those strings for dramatic effect!
Speaking of messing around with a bunch of effects... I realized at one point that I needed to try adding something in the background. Some kind of ambience to fill the space underneath the track.
Had myself a really dumb idea, but I had a good feeling that it would probably work. So, I got my microphone set up, got me a beer, then I hit the record button. Got me 2 minutes of myself drinking, burping, and remarking to myself how dumb this idea was. Saved and then loaded the audio into the project. Reversed it, and pitched it down an octave, threw some effects and reverb on there... and it actually worked out!
Some highlights being at 1:11, what sounds like a reverbed monster roar/rumble was actually the best burp of the recording. 2:21 was me commenting on the first couple of weak burps. Then around 2:40 is the sound of me cracking open the beer.
Thats the beauty of sound design and ambience shenanigans, man. You can take the dumbest, and weirdest things, and... itll just work out in the end. No one would ever know either. Only those of us privy to this silly trivia here in the description will be able to have a chuckle at the fact that weve got spooky beer burps for ambience.
Anyways, hope you all enjoy our last of the spooky/ambient songs in the soundtrack. Up next, were kicking things into high gear! Cant wait to start working on MAP31s Dream, Dream Eternal. ~DAR

Finally got around to working on this great MAP01 track from Back To Saturn X!
I got stuck for a while on this one actually. I spent a lot of time trying to decide whether to use the acoustic throughout the whole thing (like in the original).
I finally decided to use my Ibanez for the majority of it, saving the acoustic for that nice little bit towards the end.

This release shouldnt be a surprise for those of you whom follow the originals channel. As for everyone else, I am very proud to present VOLUME 1 of my first ever MIDI Soundtrack! Specifically an (mostly) original soundtrack for a large total conversion mod for the GZDoom engine (more details can be found in the pinned comment on this video).
To date, this is my largest collection of songs (18!) that Ive put out in a single release! The length of the soundtrack is actually half as long as it is here. I decided to have each track loop at least once before fading out, mostly for the sake of everyones listening pleasure!
Its been a very fun and interesting experience composing my first all-MIDI soundtrack! Ive found that I compose and write quite a bit differently compared to my usual style when writing with a guitar in my lap. Not having to worry about all the usual things (like VST plugins, EQ, mixing, mastering, etc.), I was able to just solely focus on writing music! Working within the constraints of General MIDI and GZDooms default soundfont (gzdoom.sf2) really has been a case of less is more.
As the name suggests, this soundtrack is still FAR from finished! I just figured that with 18 MIDIs created so far for the project, now would be a good time to release a part 1 or VOLUME 1 of sorts.
The soundtrack will have quite a variety of songs (to go along with the varied styles of levels split among the 3 episodes). Some tracks are my own little extensions/renditions of Wolfenstein 3D tracks. Some tracks have a more techno/electronic theme (intended for use in the Astrostein-like moon levels of Episode 3). Some tracks trying to imitate Wolfenstein 3D (such as The Operator Shuffle). Then there are songs that try to keep things more orchestral in nature. Lastly, some tracks take a more rock/metal approach (Chains for Veins, Ending The Fight). This balance of different styles is something Im going to strive to keep as I continue composing for this project!
Anyways, I hope you all enjoy VOLUME 1 of this soundtrack as much as I enjoyed putting it together! ~DAR

A triumphant and hype track, very fitting as we near the final stretch of this marathon!
Added in a harmony bit when the guitars first kick in. Threw in some tom drums here and there, and also extended the middle ever so slightly to do a little bit of noodling.

Such a fitting song for a level where youre being chased by a frequently teleporting Cyberdemon!
There wasnt too much that was changed for this one. I had thought about having things escalate further at the end by extending it and adding some heavy guitars. However, I felt like doing that wouldve changed up the atmosphere too much.
Instead, I focused on trying to make things sound a little creepier. For instance, I wound up replacing the harp from the original with a.... a whistling... xylophone?? I had been trying to find a sound that would be fitting as a replacement. I couldnt find anything for a while, then by total accident, I loaded up a xylophone sample. When it played through the effects-chain that I had already set up, it wound up sounding very different! I loved how creepy it sounded, as well as the added bonus of Xylophones arent supposed to whistle!. Just really adds to the spookiness of the track, I think!
The original made clever use of a piano and its volume controls in order to achieve this pulsing, pad synth sort of sound (like the part from 1:39-1:53 for example). I wound up loading up one of my favorite synths for this, and then recorded it after running it through some effects to glitch it out. I kept the synth playing on the left side, while the glitched recording played back on the right side, along with some heavy reverb.
The main and most noticeable addition to this track would be the newly added choir parts towards the end. Adding some choirs is always a great go-to choice for complementing a very spooky and ominous atmosphere! I felt it made for a nice addition to the last part of this track. I also added some subtle french horns to accompany the deep strings that play during this last bit as well.
Aside from that, theres just some other very small additions, like the occasional gong, bells, a synth quietly panning from left-to-right, and throwing in a creepy wind sound.
Now for some fun trivia, I had totally forgotten which level this was when I was recording. So, as I watched the screen-melt effect reveal a not-so-friendly Cyberdemon, I was genuinely startled!
