Most color tools and plugins are really just compensating for a bad output transform — or worse, they *are* the bad output transform that you have to endlessly slider-shuffle just to get a half-decent image — all in the name of "look dev".
Referent is the foundation you should have had all along: a free LUT that gives you finished contrast, rich skin tones, and a filmic color palette in one step. Set it up in-camera or in Resolve.
Download Referent (free): cullenkellycolor.com/toolkit/referent
In this video I walk through how to install and use Referent whether you're a DP or a colorist, and compare its behavior against a stock camera LUT and a Resolve CST.
What's in the download:
—Viewing LUTs for every major camera (ARRI, RED, Sony, etc.)
—A DaVinci Wide Gamut version for use in Resolve
Setup:
—DPs: Load the LUT for your camera into the camera itself, or onto your reference monitor
—Colorists: Apply the DWG version as your output transform
Resources mentioned in this video:
—Grayscale Ramp DCTL: cullenkellycolor.com/toolkit/greyscale-ramp-dctl
—DRT explainer video: youtube.com/watch?v=sATGVWxOnE0
—Genesis (photochemical look dev plugin): cullenkellycolor.com/genesis
—Contour (digital look dev plugin): cullenkellycolor.com/contour
