In this video I look at the serious issues of counterfeit electronic components with the help of Mark Patrick from Mouser and Ian Wallace from DigiKey.
Counterfeit components can cause major issues for manufacturers. They can enter the supply chain for any unwary purchasers and they can cause major problems in terms of equipment failure as well as major issues with government organisations who can blacklist companies who use them.
Counterfeit components are basically components that have been made by copying an original design without the permission and design documentation of the original company. It particularly affects integrated circuits where the manufacturer does not release the original design information and another company just copies them.
As the original documentation is not available, it is certain that the full functionality cannot be achieved. Sometimes it can be difficult to detect these components using simple tests - only when their full functionality is required will the issues begin.
To overcome the issues of counterfeit components, authorised or franchised distributors must be used. They obtain their components directly from the manufacturers and as a result they eliminate the possibility of counterfeit components entering the supply chain.
