In 2009, I believed that it was impossible to beat DK64 with 0 Golden Bananas (GBs). There were so many obstacles at the time that it seemed like it couldn't be done. Here are some of the problems we faced:

* We didn't have enough time to get the key in Hideout Helm without turning in blueprints, which gives you GBs.
* We couldn't enter Angry Aztec without five GBs.
* We couldn't enter Jungle Japes without one GB.
* We couldn't free Diddy in Jungle Japes without picking up a GB.
* We couldn't get past the first open area in Angry Aztec without Diddy.

One by one, these and other obstacles fell, and I completed a 0 GB playthrough in April 2010. The next question for minimalists was whether it was possible to beat the game with 0% completion. Getting four items that count toward your percentage (in this case, GBs and keys) puts you at 1%, so you can only get three such items. The keys from Frantic Factory and Hideout Helm are necessary to make K. Rool's ship appear, so you need to get them. That leaves room for one more item. You need Lanky to free Chunky, so a trip to Angry Aztec is mandatory. Without a way to glitch inside the lobby, you must get the Jungle Japes key. But then you can't free Diddy; to do so, you must either pick up the GB in front of his cage (bringing you to 1%) or use the King Kutout boss fight, which requires you to get the Fungi Forest key (bringing you to 1%). So, a way into the Angry Aztec lobby early seemed like the solution. In June 2010, I found a trick to get into the lobby with Diddy and completed a 0% playthrough.

Now that 0 GB and 0% playthroughs were possible separately, we wondered if it was possible to accomplish both goals in a single playthrough. The 0 GB route involved getting 1% completion and the 0% route involved getting a GB (the one in front of Diddy's cage). The two most plausible ways to resolve the problem were as follows:

* A way into the Angry Aztec lobby early with DK.
* A way into the Hideout Helm lobby early with DK.

These two tricks would produce very different routes, but they would both allow for a 0 GB, 0% playthrough. Several players worked on each trick, but both tricks proved difficult. Finally, in July 2012, RingRush used tool assistance on an emulator to get into the Angry Aztec lobby early with DK. I tried to replicate the trick legitimately in order to do a 0 GB, 0% playthrough, but it was extremely difficult, so I decided to try to get into the lobby another way. Before long, I found an easier method and completed the playthrough.

This playthrough is divided into 7 parts. In this part, I begin with a glitch on the main menu called the Funky Weapons Glitch that allows you to start the game with several upgrades. I did this for convenience; it's not necessary for a 0 GB, 0% playthrough. After completing the training barrels, I leave the training area and use a glitch to get the camera. Again, this is for convenience; the camera allows me to collect coins quickly. After getting the camera, I pick up a rainbow coin, activate a warp, and save.
