Domino World 2020 wasn't possible in person this year, but the team wanted to approximate the experience virtually as closely as possible. Collaborating on one massive project with my best friends in the world (and pretty good chain reaction artists, too!) is such a special annual opportunity for me, and every one of the builders involved. Here is a close-up of the machine I made for the event!

Domino World is an event hosted by bpdoles:

MACHINE STATS:
Time taken to build: 11 days
Number of fails: 38 (plus 6 working takes I didn't use because of filming/machine imperfections)
Time: 0:40
Favorite tricks: Circular double billiard ball chain, Diagonally sliding tiles
Most fails: Circular double billiard ball chain
Most frustrating trick: Flexy ruler ball lift

It's been a while since I've built an event machine that I truly felt happy with, but this is definitely one I can be proud of! Between ISM, Domino World, and Reactica, it always felt like what I built could be improved in some way. But this machine feels different. I really believe this is just about the best job I could do given the strict time constraints. I'm very proud of all of the main ideas, but I think the overall pathing and cohesion matters a lot more. That's the main reason I'm so happy with this machine. My DW19 machine suffered from the issue of "good tricks but bad connections," essentially meaning that there's nothing wrong with the individual tricks, but the machine doesn't seem cohesive because the tricks never play off each other in any way, there are no creative transitions between them, and they don't even fit together in the physical space. It reads more as a "collection of tricks" than a "machine." This machine, however, fixes all those issues. Yes, the tricks are good, but there IS interplay between the ideas, there IS intricate pathing, and there IS a puzzle-piece-esque way in which the tricks occupy the physical space. I hope I'm able to make something similarly good at the next *true* live event; here's to Domino World 2021!
