Last week I had the incredible opportunity to participate in Reactica, the largest chain reaction in California, for the second year in a row. This year, the team attempted to break the Guinness World Record for Largest Rube Goldberg Machine. Here is the 96-step section that I built for the event this year!

MACHINE STATS:
Time taken to build: 7 days
Number of fails: Not totally sure, probably less than 20
Time: 1:32
Favorite tricks: Rubber duck Newton's cradle, Sliding flexing parallelogram track ("monorail")
Most fails: Fidget spinner
Most frustrating trick: Fidget spinner
You may have noticed that every other builder had two (or three!) tables to fill for this event. That was originally the plan for me too, although after about halfway through Day 2, I realized that I was building in a style so compact, I would never fill two tables. It was at this point that Alex graciously allowed me to build only one table instead of the initially planned two tables. This was definitely the right move, since, seemingly unlike most builders, the prospect of condensing my 70-step quota into a single table was FAR less daunting than the prospect of filling up 48 square feet of table space. The result of this decision is a machine that is just about as compact (at least in the first two thirds) as a typical full-complexity machine!
