Ever noticed that dogs seem to sniff more intensely in snow and cold weather?
That’s because cold conditions actually enhance how scents behave — and how dogs read them.

In cold air, smells don’t rise and disperse as quickly. Heat makes scent molecules lift and scatter, but cold air keeps them lower to the ground, right where a dog’s nose works best.

Snow also acts like a scent preservative. Odour particles get trapped in the snow instead of evaporating, allowing dogs to detect older tracks for much longer than they could on warm ground.

Cold, moist air helps too. It keeps scent molecules hydrated and intact, making them easier for a dog’s highly sensitive nose to detect and separate.
