Does dissociative identity disorder cause a person to murder?
In the stepmom murderer trial, Letecia Stauch is pleading not guilty claiming she has dissociative identity disorder (DID), previously known as multiple personality disorder, which one of her alternative personalities supposedly caused her to kill her 11-year-old stepson, Gannon.
This disorder is where two or more distinct personality states exist in a single individual. It develops in reaction to trauma and is characterized by “switching” to alternative identities. Personality switching can be triggered during certain situations, emotions, stress, or substance use.
The most famous case of this was serial killer Billy Milligan who claimed to have 24 different people living inside of him. However, many believe he was just malingering the disorder to avoid taking responsibility for his crimes. Despite what you see on fictional crime shows, those with this disorder are not specifically more violent, but may even be less violent in alternate personalities because violence will many times cause them to seek the protective comfort of typically entering a more childlike personality.
