Derek Van Schaik | Why big-money contracts cause athletes to perform poorly @DerekVanSchaik | Uploaded December 2022 | Updated October 2024, 10 hours ago.
Have you ever noticed that when an athlete signs a big money contract with a new team, they begin playing poorly? Ever wonder the psychology of why that happens?
We’ve recently seen this with the new Denver Broncos quarterback, Russell Wilson, who signed 5 year - $245 million contract. He comes here to Denver from Seattle and is now playing terribly, so what’s psychologically going on.
First, stress. One of the most stressful things any of us can do is move to a new city and start a new job. In addition to the personal stresses, the athlete must figure out working relationships, communication among teammates, and feel comfortable in their new leadership role, especially for a quarterback.
Second, impostor syndrome leading to performance anxiety. Imposture syndrome is doubting your abilities feeling like a fraud. Suddenly given more money than they ever dreamed, causes doubt to creep into their minds wondering if they’re worth it. What’s very interesting is that many times the stress we talked about exacerbates their imposture syndrome causing more stress and more imposture syndrome and performance anxiety on the field.
