Does beetroot juice really work? I tested it for 3 weeks with 600 deficit push ups to find out if beetroot juice can boost performance in a simple muscle endurance challenge.
Beetroot juice is high in nitrates, which your body converts to nitric oxide — widening your blood vessels so more oxygen reaches your muscles. That's the theory. I wanted to see whether it made a measurable difference to my endurance.
The setup: 100 deficit push ups, three times a week, timed. First a baseline with no beetroot at all. Then a week off training. Then the same protocol again, but with concentrated beetroot juice shots taken two hours before each session. For context, I'm 6'5" and around 108kg (240lb).
The difference between the two weeks genuinely surprised me.
I'll be upfront: this is one guy with a stopwatch, not a controlled study. My times were already improving from training alone before I touched any beetroot, and I say so in the video. But the trend was hard to ignore.
