If you want to learn how to be a better communicator with your spouse, or significant other, here are a few things you can do:

First, make it a Priority.

If you want to get better at communication, it must be something that you really want to do. :)

It’s my experience that we do what we really want to do. If we really want to get better at communicating with our spouses, or significant others, we will make time, and we will treat them as people who are significant to us. It doesn’t seem we have a hard time communicating with our most valued clients, do we?

If the person with whom we want to communicate is truly important to us, we will make it a priority to communicate – or learn to communicate – with them.

Second, we must practice Presence.

There are so many things in our world that can distract us from another human being. If we want to learn to communicate better with another human being, it’s crucial that we are present in their presence.

Look at them.

Listen to them.

Immerse yourself in the moment with them.

When we work to remove any and all distractions from the person with whom we want to communicate, we create a sacred space, where conversation can grow organically.

Third, we must Practice.

To get better at anything, we must work at it. Once you’ve made it a priority to communicate with your spouse, or significant other, and once you are truly present in their presence, practice chatting with them.

If someone is truly interesting to us, we will take a true interest in them.

Ask your spouse, or significant other, how their day was, how that meeting went, how they feel about the family drama they endured during the holidays. :-)

Another tool you can look at is a conversation starting game called, Chat Pack. Or, use the 4 D’s as an outline for a meaningful conversation. Ask them to share a delight, something that is draining them, something they have discovered (learned) recently, and something they’re determined to do.
