A Day of Small Things | Do you know Virginia Woolf translated Aeschylus' Ancient Greek tragedies? // Woolf Diary #shorts @adayofsmallthings | Uploaded December 2022 | Updated October 2024, 1 hour ago.
On this day 100 years ago, 3 December 1922, Virginia Woolf wrote in her diary,
“I should be at Aeschylus, for I am making a complete edition, text, translation, & notes of my own.”
Aeschylus is one of the Ancient Greek tragedians and his plays are on my reading list for 2023. So apparently, Virginia Woolf studied and translated Greek classics! I don’t think her translations were published because the only published book or essay related to Ancient Greek that I can find is an essay called ‘On Not Knowing Greek’. My googling also led me to an academic paper all about Virginia Woolf's Greek Notebook, which is one of her reading notebooks.
The Greek Notebook now lives in The Keep, an archive centre that is part of the Sussex University Library, in Brighton, on the south coast of England.
