There was a rumor circulating on Facebook in June 2017 that the jelly shoes sold at Walmart tested positive for lead with a 3M leadcheck swab. This seemed curious to us as a leadcheck swab will only test positive if more than 600 PPM lead can wipe off onto the swab. Even if that much lead were present in the shoes, we would not expect it to be able to be picked up by a swab - so we headed to a local Walmart to check it out and test multiple styles of jelly shoes for lead with a non-radioactive source X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer (XRF).
