Friendly Review of the DJI Ronin-S (bit.ly/2yDJIr8).
Update: Use the included RSS to IR cable to remotely trigger the camera in the 2 sec and 10 sec self-timer / remote shutter settings, and to remotely start and stop video by enabling 'remote control' which is the last setting in the camera/video menu.
This three-axis motorized gimbal stabilizer holds DSLR and mirrorless cameras. It has an 8 pound payload capacity as well as integrated controls. In this video, I test out the Ronin-S with the Canon 80D which was not originally listed as being compatible with it, but the list has now been updated to include it. You can either use it with no integrated controls or with the included IR remote trigger. To trigger your shutter you must put it in self-timer / remote 10-second or 2-second mode. I wish it would plug directly in the E3 interface, but it doesn't. This would allow it to also start and stop the recording of video. Currently, the panorama and motion track work well, but the motionlapse is very jerky. The IR shutter control seems to be very sporadic, and the slow Ronin-S movements are not smooth over a very long time period. Hopefully, a FW update will help in the future. The focus wheel also does not work. The capture mode is great for using it as an unmanned remote gimbal camera. I tested it out going down slides, climbing and crawling through tight places. I also ran and chased my kids around in the underslung mode which turned out great for the low shots. Using the trigger for follow mode. is awesome. I had some drift issues, but the autotune and calibration features fixed it. If you are trying to take B Roll to enter the Peter McKinnon B-Roll challenge, this is your tool for some amazing shots.
