Paleontologists heatedly debate today whether it was an asteroid that triggered the sudden demise of the dinos 65mya or a gradual climate change caused by volcanic activity over millions of years. These proposals have been on the table for decades. The reality is that not a single so-called ‘paleontologist’ on Earth has any idea [i.e., cannot rationally explain] how mass or background extinctions happen. Any individual who cannot explain extinction rationally is not a paleontologist. The only job of a paleontologist is to explain the causes and mechanisms underlying extinction. The rest is just stamp collecting.
