For a long time, people in the West believed that F-14 Tomcat achieved its first air-to-air victories in August 1981 when two US Navy aircraft shot down two Libyan Su-22s. But by that time, Tomcats in Iranian service had already scored multiple kills. In fact, the first ones were achieved even before the full-scale war with Iraq broke out. Discarded by Western observers as hardly operational, IRIAF F-14s were nevertheless a key factor in the eight year long war.
