After the first two days of intense aerial combat with the Japanese invaders, and the loss of two capital ships, Prince of Wales and Repulse, Brewster Buffalo pilots again faced their Japanese opponents on December 13th, 1941. The British HQ in Singapore decided to redeploy some Buffalos to airfields such as Ipoh and Butterworth. At first, Australian pilots from 453 Squadron achieved success, shooting down several Japanese bombers. But then, a large number of Ki-27s appeared over Butterworth. Several Buffalo pilots took off to meet them.
