We've all grown up hearing the story of the rakhi โ but what does history
actually say?
The tale of Rani Karnavati of Chittor sending a rakhi to the Mughal emperor
Humayun appears neither in contemporary Rajput accounts nor in contemporary
Mughal chronicles. Historian Satish Chandra treats it as most likely a piece
of folklore, popularised by James Tod through his book "Annals and Antiquities
of Rajasthan." By the time Humayun moved towards Chittor, Bahadur Shah of
Gujarat had already carried out his attack.
But the rakhi does have a documented chapter in Indian history โ 16 October
1905, the day the Partition of Bengal took effect, when Rabindranath Tagore
called on people to tie rakhis on one another as a symbol of Hindu-Muslim
unity. Thousands did. It remains a significant moment in the Indian National
Movement โ and a highly relevant fact for UPSC.
