Tá na hora, gente! Introducing a new series for Brazilians learning to master their English pronunciation - Pode Crer! This first video lesson (of four) shows how we can use Portuguese spelling and pronunciation patterns to sound more natural and native-like when speaking English. The series is kind of a game where I write a word on the screen and if you read the word as if it were Portuguese, it will sound close (if not identical) to a common English word. You get to guess which English word youre actually saying! Its a fun game that you can share with others. Try and see if they can guess before I reveal the answer!!
Were trying to create a modification from the inglês brasileiro which weve grown accustomed to, and in many cases feels more comfortable. Sometimes we need to question certain sounds or at least verify that what were saying is extremely clear and natural, given the place were going to be using the language. Since I work as a pronunciation coach to many amazing Brazilians ;) I get to see first hand which mistakes are commonly made and which techniques are easiest to remember. If spelling a word in *Brazinglish* or *Portunglês* is the best way to help make a relationship to the pronunciation, then lets start spelling words in a more strategic way - at least for the purposes of learning the complex pronunciation of English!

This explanation is taken from a longer presentation from the online Polyglot Gathering and deals with the 7 different allophones (pronunciation variations) of the letter T in American English.
Although this excessive variation is unique to North American English, you might find it extremely useful to identify other allophones of letters in the language that *youre* studying, if its not English.
This is part of the general technique for improving or modifying a foreign accent, and the process is surprisingly similar no matter what language youre learning to master.

This Chaf and Chet sound is one that may cause insecurity since its a new sound that doesnt exist naturally in English. Its a question of comfort and of balance. Just like most sounds in Modern Hebrew its not to be overdone, just to show you can do it, but rather we want to be able to clearly distinguish it from other sounds like Hay (basically silent) and Kaf Kuf (the harder K sound).
You dont have to push through discomfort or go too far back in your throat to pronounce this sound. In fact, it comes up in countless other languages that we hear everyday like Spanish, French, Russian, Dutch, Arabic, and even Mandarin Chinese to name just a few!
