Dewalt 18V Power File $80 Knock-off – Any Good?
In this video I take a close look at a cheap copy of the popular DeWalt style 18V power file belt sander. For around $80, is it actually any good, or just another cheap tool that will end up in the junk pile?
Overall, for the money, it’s actually a handy little tool. It has variable speed control, reverse function, and it’s compact enough to get into tight spots where larger sanders won’t fit. That makes it useful for metal work, locksmith work, fabrication, sharpening, cleaning rust, and detail sanding.
However, it’s not perfect. The battery fitment is very tight, so getting the battery on and off can be annoying. Changing the direction of the belt drive is also a bit stiff. While the tool does have reverse, the sanding belts themselves are designed to run in one direction only, so that’s something to keep in mind if you want maximum belt life.
For a budget tool, though, it performs better than expected and could be worth having in the workshop if you don’t want to spend big money on the genuine DeWalt version. The real DeWalt band file tools are designed for professional commercial use and include features like variable speed and pivoting arms. ()
