In this video, I unbox and fully demonstrate the Carbine Longreach 60mm Standard Backset Mortice Lock, showing you exactly what comes in the box, how the lock works, and why it has become one of the most advanced latching mortice locks available in Australia. This is a complete locksmith breakdown of the lock body, internal parts, cam system, latch options, and the overall hardware. If you’re a locksmith, technician, builder, or simply interested in lock hardware, this in-depth workshop demo will show you everything you need to know.

The Carbine Longreach lock is designed for both commercial and residential use, offering strength, smooth operation, fire rating, and long-term reliability. One of the first things I cover in the video is the construction quality. The body, faceplate, latchbolt, and snib are all stainless steel, giving the lock excellent durability. Carbine rates this lock at over 1,000,000 cycles, far exceeding what most traditional mortice locks achieve. You’ll see close-up shots of the machining, the thickness of the plates, and the overall internal build quality so you can understand why this lock has quickly become popular among locksmiths.

One of the biggest features of the Longreach lock is the selectable latchbolt projection. In the video, I demonstrate how the latch can be set to the standard 15mm length or extended out to 19.5mm. This is extremely useful for doors with larger frame gaps or misaligned frames. I show how to change the projection, how the latch interacts with the strike plate, and how the deadlatching works in both positions.

The improved deadlatching mechanism is another key point in this demo. Many older locks fail to deadlatch properly when the door gap is too large, making the lock vulnerable. Carbine designed this mechanism to remain functional even with gaps up to 9.5mm. I demonstrate this in real time, showing how the deadlatch behaves with different door clearances and why this update improves security.

Another major upgrade is the new Carbine XZ 2-in-1 cam. This cam not only locks and unlocks the handles but can also retract the latch. I show how the cam operates, how it interacts with the oval cylinder, and why the cam design gives more options than the older W, X, and Z cam setups. I also explain cylinder compatibility, including the important note that the W cam must be installed with the leg at the bottom for correct operation with this lock.

In the video, I also cover the anti-lockout mode. This feature stops accidental lockouts and is activated using the supplied Allen key. I show how to turn this mode on and off, and explain why it’s valuable in both commercial and domestic installations. The lock is also fully fire-rated for up to 4 hours when installed on a compliant doorset, and I explain why fire rating is critical in certain buildings and jobs.

We also go through the installation side of things. The lock suits doors from 32mm to 50mm thick, with hardware available for doors up to 100mm. It supports inward and outward opening doors, and the ideal door-to-frame clearance is 3–5mm. I show the latching action at different clearances and explain how the improved latch design prevents jamming on closing. I also demonstrate how the lock performs when used with electric strikes, which is important for access control work.

Towards the end, I show the recommended Carbine Crisi round furniture, the rebate kit, and the extended timber faceplate. This gives you a full idea of how the lock fits into different door setups.

If you want a real locksmith to look at how this lock operates, installs, and performs, this video will give you everything you need.
