Current queue warning systems use sensors and signage to alert drivers about upcoming traffic issues. However, the systems can be less effective in areas where the availability of sensors is lower. Research has shown the inclusion of vehicle-specific warnings through third party providers can help reach more drivers.
The Texas A&M Transportation Institute and TxDOT designed a system that integrates these data sources and uses simulation to test results. The goal is to deploy a prototype for field evaluation and document the algorithm for possible use in a traffic management system.
