Cass Tech (8-0) entered this championship game undefeated and in search of their first PSL championship against rulers of the league King. Cass Tech got to the championship game because their defense, which had not surrendered a single point all season long. Cass Tech was led on offense by All-American running back Clarence Williams (University of Michigan), and led on defense by Keith Travis (University of Toledo), Carlton Sykes (University of Cincinnati) and Mario Evans (Western Michigan University). King (7-1) was making their fifth appearance in the PSL championship game in six years and a rematch of the 1990 title game where King beat Cass, 50-26. King was led by freshman sensation D. Bryant (Duke University) at quarterback on offense with Sterling Anderson at running back and Lamar Henderson at wide receiver. King was coached by the legendary James Reynolds. Cass won, 41-34 in a very exciting game.
