Ive made this fading then and now video showing how the former Sinfin Barracks area has changed using a top-down view from 1948 lined up with a 2026 view, hope you enjoy my video and please leave a comment if you do.
This then and now view is centred around where the former Normaton Barracks were located, today this is Foresters Leisure Park.
In this then and now there are no major changes but if you start looking a bit closer (on a big screen ideally) you will spot things such as...
In the 1948 view you can see site of Normaton Barracks, associated with the Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire regiment).
Construction started in 1874 and was completed around 1877, decommissioned for military use in 1963 and demolished in 1981.
Today this site is home to many commercial units such as KFC, Lidl, Premier Inn, Ten Pin, Costa Coffee, Armadillo self-storage.
Showcase Cinema was built on the plot and opened on 17th November 1988, it closed January 2021.
It was partially demolished in April 2021 and halted July 2021, It was then fully demolished in June 2026, The council didn’t grant planning permission until 15th Jan 2026.
In 2026 the only single clue that that Barracks used to be there is the brick wall that runs from the top of Sinfin Lane to where Lidl starts.
Lidl used to be Gala bingo, this closed in 2020 and Lidl bought it and they opened in 2022.
The Oasthouse opened in 1989, built in the style of a traditional Kentish/Southeast English Oast House.
