Hope you enjoy my little video about this rusty old bridge and how it used to look. East Mill was built in 1911.
The Derby firm Andrew Handyside who made Friar Gate bridge in Derby also made many hundreds of other bridges of many different sizes around the world such as this small footbridge located in the River Gardens at Belper, Derbyshire, UK.
In this video I have used my photographs of the footbridge as well as a lovely photograph from 1907 and also A.I. to bring the photograph to life.
Next time you visit Belper River Gardens have a look at this bridge, its located near the car park area.
This footbridge was supplied by Andrew Handyside and Company Ltd in 1907 at a cost of £339. It was installed when a refreshments centre pavilion was built on the triangle of land at the southern end of the river gardens. The pavilion was created over the winter of 1907 on a triangle of land at the southern end of the site, surrounded on each side by the water channels to the mills. The metal footbridge was created by Andrew Handyside and Co for £339 to provide access.
In 1911 changes had to be made to the pavilion, removing the southern tip so that the new
East Mill could be built beside it. The pavilion was extended on its eastern side to
recompense, with the provision of an open veranda.
I would like to thank Craig Statham for sending me the 1907 photograph.
In 2012 I applied to English Heritage to get this bridge listed but they decided its not worth saving, real shame.
