Andrew Handyside who made Friargate bridge in Derby made hundreds of bridges around the world, here is another example in Bath.
Midland Road Bridge, Bath, Somerset, UK was manufactured in Derby in 1905.
As you can see in my video this bridge is looking in pretty good condition for saying it was made 121 years ago, in 2015 it had a £1 Million refurbishment which included removal of the old paintwork and repainting with new paint systems to protect the steelwork and some structural repairs.
Midland Road Bridge carries the B3118 road, which is one of the main inner city road crossings over the River Avon.
This is a single span riveted steel girder bridge, It has a span of 155 feet (47M) and 36 feet (11M) wide and replaced the previous smaller bridge that was built in 1870.
It was built to increase capacity and accommodate the anticipated electric tram system at the time but this was never used and the track was removed.
Note the original 1870's bridge was re-used to provide a link between the old 'scavenger's yard' and the new 'Destructor' incinerator across the Avon further to the west of the city, it remained there until 2016 when that was replaced with a new bridge. The decorative cast scrolls that
were at the end of the bridge were reinstated in Elizabeth Park as features.
There are actually three items nearby all made by Handyside, This road bridge, the former railway bridge next to it and also the former Green Park railway station, I will post about the other two items later.
