Ive made this fading then and now video showing how The Cavendish area has changed using a top-down view from 1948 lined up with a 2026 view, hope you enjoy my video and please leave a comment if you do.
This then and now is centred over where the former Cavendish cinema was located near the Cavendish roundabout.
In this then and now there are no major changes but if you start looking a bit closer (on a big screen ideally) you will spot things such as...
In the 1948 view, where B&M is located today there used to be the Cavendish Cinema which was opened 28th December 1937. It had a capacity of
1664 seats ! It closed on thr 19th November 1960 and was demolished in 1965. The plot of land was then used by a string
of supermarkets, FineFare, Somerfield, In July 2010 it became a Co-op, In 2015 it became a B&M store.
Top left of both views you can see Normanton Park and also a large plot of allotments running parallel to Lewis Street
Notice how in 1948 there is a roundabout at the junction with Derby Lane, Kenilworth Avenue, today has gone in the 2026 view, this road forms part of Derby's outer ringroad A5111.
In the 1948 view there was a building against the Stenson roundabout (the triangle formered by Stenson Rd/Kenilworth Ave, Offerton Ave) Im guess
it was demolished when the outer ring road was widened?
